The Art of Taming the Untamed Tongue—The 30 Experiment

Confession time.

I’ve allowed my tongue a lot of liberties lately.

As with any bad habit, it began small; simply voicing a frustration I normally kept inside. It felt good to stand up for myself. In no time my mind searched out injustices to me and others then my tongue used them for platforms for complaining, gossiping and judging.

My tongue has become a veritable Michelangelo in painting vivid portraits of doom and gloom. Sometimes it sculpted the hard, harsh realities of disappointments and hopelessness. Or it molded and manipulated others like clay with information (a.k.a. gossip) I knew.

Enough is Enough.

Have you ever had events in your life that seemed choreographed?

I was given a Bible-in-a-year and have been faithful in reading the portions each day. Felt pretty good about that actually. Until I came to the crumbling Israelites in the desert. Then I felt uncomfortable.

A few days ago I read an article in Charisma magazine called, “Watch You Tongue,” by Deborah Smith Pegues. The article was based on her book, 30 Days to Taming Your Tongue.

The uncomfortable-ness revealed itself for what it was, the Holy Spirit’s conviction. When I determined that I was going to go on a “tongue fast” I was horrified to learn just how pervasive the problem was.

Anyone out there share this problem?

In the coming weeks, I’m going to open the bolted doors of my heart for you to see and hopefully my transparency will be a strong motivator for me to push through this. And even better that you will join me.

My friend Pam Halter informed me that experts say if you make a change for 21-days it becomes a habit. I’m praying that with the Holy Spirit’s help, those 30 days will see a breakthrough to taming my tongue.

Anyone else want to join me?
